Whirlpool dishwasher code F9 E1: long drain (not draining)

Fixable with care

Also shown as F9E1

What it means

The dishwasher took too long to drain.

What to try

Unplug the dishwasher before any step beyond a quick look, and turn the water off before touching hoses.

  1. Switch off power at the breaker and close the water valve under the sink before reaching in.
  2. Take out the filters, rinse them under running water and brush off residue.
  3. Check the drain hose for kinks, pinches or clogs.
  4. If it drains through a garbage disposal, clear the disposal. On a newly installed disposal, check the knockout plug was removed from its dishwasher inlet.
  5. If you have an air gap on the sink, take off its cap and clear debris from inside.
  6. Restore power and water, then run a short cycle to test.

Call a technician if

  • Draining doesn’t improve after these checks.
  • You notice electrical problems or leaks.

Resetting a Whirlpool dishwasher

Whirlpool’s power cycle: disconnect the dishwasher for 30 seconds. Unplug it if it plugs in; if it’s hardwired, switch off its breaker at the electrical panel. Then restore power.
