Whirlpool washer code drn: not draining properly (top-load HE)

Fixable with care

What it means

The washer can’t get the water out properly. Whirlpool says it may be an installation problem with the drain setup.

What to try

Unplug the washer before any step beyond a quick look, and turn the water off before touching hoses.

  1. Check the drain hose isn’t kinked or clogged, and that the drainpipe or sink it empties into isn’t blocked.
  2. Check the standpipe height. Whirlpool’s drain guide gives 30 to 96 inches; a taller pipe can stop the pump keeping up.
  3. Secure the hose as your installation instructions describe.
  4. Use only HE detergent, measured carefully.

Call a technician if

  • The drain setup checks out and it still won’t drain.

Resetting a Whirlpool washer

To clear a code on a front-loader, press Pause/Cancel twice and then Power once. On top-load HE models, press Start/Pause once to clear it. For an unexplained F#E# code, unplug the washer for 5 minutes, plug it back in, choose a cycle and press Start.
