Whirlpool washer code F9 E1: draining too slowly (front-load)
Fixable with care
Also shown as F9E1
What it means
Draining took longer than about 8 minutes, so the washer stopped.
What to try
Unplug the washer before any step beyond a quick look, and turn the water off before touching hoses.
- Check the drain hose for kinks and clogs.
- Make sure the hose is held in its U-shaped hose form at the top of the standpipe.
- Check the standpipe height. Whirlpool gives a range of 39 to 96 inches for these washers.
- Use HE detergent. Extra suds slow draining down.
- Clean the pump filter if your model has an access door at the bottom front. Lay towels and a shallow tray down first.
- Clear the code: press Pause/Cancel twice, then Power once.
Call a technician if
- The code returns once the hose, standpipe and detergent are right.
Resetting a Whirlpool washer
To clear a code on a front-loader, press Pause/Cancel twice and then Power once. On top-load HE models, press Start/Pause once to clear it. For an unexplained F#E# code, unplug the washer for 5 minutes, plug it back in, choose a cycle and press Start.
